Golf: Calcavecchia cruises to record win

Mark Calcavecchia captured his third Phoenix Open title and established US PGA Tour records for lowest 72-hole score and most birdies in a 72-hole event.

Without a win since 1998, Calcavecchia ended his drought in spectacular fashion.

He shot a four-round total of 28-under-par 256 to beat Mike Souchak's score in the 1955 Texas Open.

"It's semi-indescribable right now, actually," said Calcavecchia, who also won this event in 1989 and 1992.

"I was kind of struggling to just try to win the tournament."

Calcavecchia showed no strain after bad weather on Saturday forced him to play 28 holes. He completed a seven-under 64 in the morning to extend his lead to six strokes, then assaulted the record book with a 67 - his worst round of the weekend.

Rocco Mediate claimed second spot, eight shots behind the runaway leader with Steve Lowery a further four strokes behind at 16-under 268, with first-day leader Scott Verplank one behind.

Tiger Woods rallied for a share of fifth place with Chris DiMarco on 271, while defending champion Tom Lehman and Steve Stricker came next a shot behind.

Briton Ed Fryatt carded a four-under-par 67 to finish tied for 13th place on 10-under at 274 alongside Spain's Sergio Garcia - the leading Europeans.
