Muskerry impress on home territory in bid to retain Barton Shield
Having been taken to the second tie hole by Monkstown over their home course on Saturday, they ruthlessly disposed of Cork and Bandon by substantial margins, advancing to the provincial semi-finals at Dungarvan on August 15th-16th.
They will be joined there by Youghal, who defeated Waterford Castle in the East Munster final at Dungarvan, while Shannon made the best possible use of home advantage in the northern area as they overcame strong opposition from Limerick big guns Castletroy and Limerick Golf Club before coming through comfortably against East Clare.
Completing the Dungarvan quartet will be Ballybunion who beat Killarney in the West decider. The semi-final pairings are Ballybunion v Shannon and Muskerry v Youghal.
The Fred Daly Trophy has produced great matches so far among the younger golfers in Munster. Already through to the semi-finals at Gold Coast on August 9 are Kinsale, Mallow, and Limerick. They will be joined by the winners of Thursday’s East section decider between Thurles and West Waterford.
Meanwhile, the Munster Council have announced details of the provincial finals of the Jimmy Bruen and Pierce Purcell Shields at the East Clare club, Bodyke, on July 18.
Spanish Point, the nine hole club from West Clare, who have captured the All-Ireland pennant for the last two years will be favourites as they seek an unprecedented hat-trick of crowns.
They had to come through a nerve wracking North Munster final against Nenagh at Limerick when the decisive point in their favour was not banked until the 6th tie hole.
Their semi-final opponents at East Clare will be Thurles, Irish champions in 1989, with Kinsale taking on Newcastle West in the other match.
The semi-finals of the Jimmy Bruen Shield will be contested by Nenagh and Ballybunion and Lee Valley and Ballykisteen.
Nenagh have previously captured the title in 1997 and again in 2009. Ballybunion were the second winners of the Bruen Shield in 1979 while Lee Valley and Ballykisteen are two of the younger clubs and will hope to go on and chase national honours for the first time at Carton House in September.
