Killeen 18th hole painting for auction

Golfing aficionados with an eye for art will be presented with an unique opportunity on November 13.

Woodward Auctioneers of Cork will hold an auction of Irish and English silver and art, and included among the lots is a Graeme Baxter painting of the spectacular 18th hole of the Killeen Course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.

Surrounded by the Killarney lakes and with the clubhouse just behind the green, it is regarded as a spectacular — not to mention challenging — finishing hole.

In the 1992 Irish Open at the course, eventual winner Nick Faldo almost came a cropper at the hole, pulling a wild tee-shot to the left before somehow salvaging par and then defeating Wayne Westner in a play-off. Tom Woodward, managing director of Woodwards, is hoping golfers with fond memories of the hole will be enticed into bidding.

“Graeme Baxter has painted a lot of golfing pictures from around the world,” he said, “and even his prints are in great demand, so it’s great to be able to put an original up for action. It’s the perfect opportunity for somebody who loves golf and has a fondness for Killarney to own such a fine piece of art.”

Woodwards have estimated that the painting could go for somewhere in the region of €3,000-€6,000 but Tom Woodward believes it would not be a surprise were it go for much higher. More details of the upcoming sale can be found at www.woodwards.ie
