IT was a day of double celebration for amateur golf in Ireland with Shane Lowry’s friend and rival Niall Kearney (Royal Dublin), pictured, capturing the Brabazon Trophy (English StrokeplayChampionship) yesterday.

Kearney’s final round 70 was good enough to win by five shots from England’s Liam Burns.

“This is a real stepping stone for me. I’m on the Walker Cup Squad so hopefully this will give me a boost,” said Kearney who is the first Irishman to win the Brabazon Trophy since Ronan Rafferty in 1980.
