RUMOURS that Tiger Woods had split from fiancée Ellen Nordgren were emphatically denied by the former World number one yesterday.

Indeed she will be on his arm at the Gala Ball tonight along with all the other players and their partners.

“It’s completely false,” he said. “It’s amazing how the media (the Boston Herald in this case) can quote false things like that and not be held accountable. I think it’s just that they can get away with it. Nothing’s happened to us. We’re still very happy. We’ve had no arguments.”

Having been informed once again that he has won only five of 15 possible points from his three Ryder Cup appearances, Woods kept his cool and simply said “I just want to play well and win points for my team. If I can do that, I think it would be just great.” As for the reliance being placed on him by skipper Hal Sutton, Woods didn’t allow humility to get in the way of his forthright reaction: “It’s not any different than the rest of the captains have said.

“I qualified number one in points every time so I think that kind of says it right there. I’ve gone out there and played my best each and every time. I watched Hal’s press conference and he’s right. I’ve gone out and shot 64 and lost. And also, I’ve played poorly and lost so it goes both ways.

“I don’t go into any tournament thinking it would be great to lose,” he growled to a series of nervous titters from his audience. “You guys know how competitive I am.

“I go out there and win points for the US team. That’s what I’ve done or tried to do since my first Ryder Cup in ‘97 at Valderrama.”

A poll of European players last week indicated that a majority of European players would prefer to take on Woods than any other player in the US team. They clearly feel the extra motivation would inspire them to great deeds.

Woods said: “That’s the way it’s been since my first Ryder Cup. I know that. It’s been there from the very first week.

“That’s an attitude through every team I’ve been on, whether it’s Ryder or President’s Cup.”
