First and foremost, it produced the most remarkable winner imaginable. When a player unknown to a large percentage of competitors comes out on top in a major championship, it says it all about the shock outcome at Royal St George's.

It remains to be seen if Ben Curtis can go on to prove this was no fluke. It certainly took Paul Lawrie a long time to dispel the belief that he was an unworthy champion at Carnoustie in 1999.
