Éire Óg get back to winning ways against Mourneabbey

The Ovens club edged another tense battle between two of the county’s greatest rivals.

Round three of the Cork Credit Unions Cork LGFA senior football championship saw Éire Óg, Aghada, Clonakilty and Naomh Abán register important victories on Thursday evening.

We are fast approaching the conclusion of this year’s Cork LGFA SFC group phase.

County champions Éire Óg were looking to rebound from their recent Group 1 loss to Kinsale at home to an undefeated Mourneabbey.

The Ovens club did so in style, edging yet another tense battle between two of the county’s greatest rivals by a single point.

Orlaith Cahalane (two), Emma Cleary and Lisa Murphy goals helped Éire Óg record a 4-4 to 0-15 win. Laura Cleary and Sadbh McGoldrick were also on target to grab their club’s first championship points of the campaign.

A disappointed Mourneabbey had Laura Walsh in top form once again, contributing eight points. Doireann O’Sullivan, Lauren Finnegan, Máire O’Callaghan and Niamh O’Sullivan were also on Mourneabbey’s scoresheet.

Elsewhere in Group 1, St Val’s travelled to Ahamilla eager to get off the mark in this year’s senior championship. Standing in their way was a Clonakilty side searching for a second victory in three outings.

The West Cork club ran out the narrowest of winners, 1-9 to 1-8, to solidify their place in the knockout stages.

Moira Barrett’s first-half goal set Clonakilty on their way with Síofra Pattwell (0-3), Katie O’Driscoll, Sinead O’Donovan (0-2 each) and Aisling Moloney also contributing.

Mairead Corkery scored 1-1 and Ciara McCarthy 0-4 for a St Val’s team who also had Ruby Prenderville and Laura Buttimer on target.

Clonakilty and Mourneabbey sit joint-top of the group on six points apiece, closely followed by Éire Óg and Kinsale (three points each). St Val’s prop up the table and still await their first points.

Mourneabbey host Kinsale in round four of the senior championship on Sunday week. On the same afternoon, Éire Óg travel to St Val’s.

Into Group 2 of the Cork LGFA senior football championship where Aghada put their unblemished record on the line away to O’Donovan Rossa in Skibbereen.

The visitors reaffirmed their title credentials with a third straight victory, overpowering their opponents 3-15 to 0-3. Éabha O’Donovan and Ellen Healy were Rossa’s only scorers.

Emma Farmer (1-3), Róisín Phelan (1-2), Abigail Ring (0-5) were in scoring form for an Aghada team in which Rachel Leahy, Kaitlin Smith, Brianna Smith, Clare Walsh and Ali Smith featured prominently.

Naomh Abán and Glanmire’s Group 2 clash ended in a 1-10 to 0-4 victory for the hosts in Ballyvourney.

Noel McDonagh’s side led by a point at the break, 0-5 to 0-4, before Joanne Kelly’s second-half goal turned the tide in her team’s favour.

Naomh Abán ran out convincing winners on an evening Lydia McDonagh (0-6) and Kelly (1-2) top scored. Róisín Lehane, Amy McDonagh, Abbie Scannell and Grace Murphy also impressed.

Aghada and Naomh Abán are joint-leaders of Group 2, three points ahead of Castlehaven. O’Donovan Rossa and Glanmire have yet to register a point.

Aghada and Castlehaven clash on Sunday week with O’Donovan Rossa travelling to Glanmire on the same afternoon.
