Armagh overcame Cork thanks to an Aimee Mackin hat-trick in the opening round of the TG4 All-Ireland LGFA Senior Championship at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday afternoon.

Mackin’s first half hat-trick, including a converted penalty, helped the Ulster champions see off a spirited yet wasteful Cork in the All-Ireland SFC Group 1’s opening encounter.

Armagh dominated the first half and, although much improved in the second period, Cork’s wastefulness in front of goal proved costly.

Two missed goal opportunities along with poor shooting meant Armagh’s eight-point interval lead proved too big a mountain to climb for the Rebels.

“We definitely left ourselves with too much to do but we had our chances in the second half,” Cork manager Joe Carroll admitted.

“We created two goal chances and didn’t take either one of the two of them. The difference was, that in the first half, they were very clinical.

“Everything chance they got, they took it and got the three goals, which was big.”

Mackin’s superb opening goal into the top corner handed Armagh and early 1-1 to 0-0 lead. Cork would kick five first half points, every one of them hard earned, through Áine Terry O’Sullivan, Grace Murphy and Emma Cleary.

Yet, Mackin finished the half with 3-1 following the conversion of a penalty and another close-range finish to hand the Orchard County a 3-4 to 0-5 interval advantage.

A Katie Quirke free opened the second half scoring. Mackin responded with a point before Quirke answered once again. A fisted Leah Hallihan effort preceded an unmarked Emma Cleary missing the goal by inches.

Cork continued to press but Cassie Henderson came off the bench and scored to make it 3-6 to 0-8 with 15 minutes to go.

Kelly Mallon increased Armagh’s advantage from a tight angle. Cork answered via a Katie Quirke free before Leah Hallihan palmed a goal to the net with 8 minutes remaining.

Failure to award Cork close-range free for a three-up infringement saw Armagh kick for home in the closing stages.

Bláithin Mackin (two-pointer) and Cassie Henderson points preceded a Caoimhe McNally goal to ensure there would be no late Cork comeback.
