Mayo captain Paddy Durcan’s 2024 inter-county season is over after it was confirmed he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC Group 2, Round 1 win over Cavan.
Durcan came off the bench for the last quarter but picked up the issue in the closing seconds of the match in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.
A scan revealed the 29-year-old had damaged the knee ligament and he will not be available for the remainder of the county’s campaign.
In a Mayo GAA statement, the board executive expressed their best wishes for the Castlebar Mitchels man in his recovery and manager Kevin McStay added he would remain on as skipper.
"This is very disappointing news for Paddy and for everyone involved in Mayo GAA. He is a valued player who also exhibits outstanding leadership capabilities. We will all support and rally around him in his recovery.
“Paddy will remain our captain and a vital member of our squad, where he will continue to lead and inspire us. We look forward to his return to the playing field."
