Rathmore snatch injury-time winner  against 14-man Glenflesk

Kilcummin, Laune Rangers and Rathmore are the only Division 1 sides in Kerry with 100% records after two rounds of the SFL
Rathmore snatch injury-time winner  against 14-man Glenflesk

GOAL: Ex-Kerry minor Stephen Gannon found the net for Laune Rangers in their win over Legion.

Rathmore remain unbeaten after two rounds of Kerry's SFL but they left it very late against East Kerry rivals Glenflesk, edging it 1-13 to 0-13 thanks to last-minute penalty spot by Ciaran Collins. Collins himself intercepted a pass by a Glenflesk defender and was hauled down inside the large parallelogram.

Both sides were without key players due to Kerry commitments and injuries but Rathmore -  who had an extra man for the final quarter and played against 13 for the last eight minutes -  were fortunate to escape with two points.

Glenflesk had Kerry underage and East Kerry star Patrick Darcy in superb form and he kicked 0-5 from play while Calum Cronin and Jeff O’Donoghue were also to the fore. Rathmore profited from their two man full forward line with James Darmody and Ciaran Collins (1-2) causing all sorts of bother.

Rathmore led 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval but could not pull clear by the end of the third quarter they led by two (0-9 to 0-7) but then lost Cian Horan to a second yellow and Alan Dineen profited for Rathmore. But Glenflesk kicked four points on the trot two from Darcy and one each from Tommy Bowler and Jeff O’Donoghue to lead by two. Superb Rathmore points from Cathal Ryan and Padraig Moynihan levelled before Collins' 62nd minute penalty.

Kilcummin and Laune Rangers are two other teams with 100% starts from the first two  rounds after defeating Kerins O’Rahillys and Killarney Legion respectively. Kilcummin did not lead O’Rahillys until the 49th minute but a penalty save from their keeper Keith O’Leary when the Tralee side led 0-8 to 0-7 was a big turning point in the East Kerry hosts' favour  as they went on to win 0-11 to 0-8. 2018 All-Ireland MFC winning captain Paul O’Shea was in magnificent form in the middle of the pitch. Kilcummin face Dr Crokes next weekend in Round 3 in what will be a good early season indicator for both sides.

There was also a penalty saved in Laune Rangers' victory over Legion. However, former All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Brian Kelly’s stop on Laune Rangers’ John Tyther just before half-time did not prevent the Killorglin side from going on to win by for points, 1-14 to 1-10.

It was 0-8 apiece after 40 minutes before Stephen Gannon's late goal pushed Killorglin into a winning lead. Eoghan O’Sullivan scored an injury time consolation goal for Legion. Liam Hassett’s side now face Milltown/Castlemaine next weekend in a Mid Kerry derby. Spa beat a young Gaeltacht side, 3-9 to 0-10.

Ballymacelligott and Milltown/Castlemaine shared the points, 1-8 each, in Caherslee on Saturday, with Ballymac's pitch unavailable. The Mid Kerry men led 1-5 to 0-5 at the break with Sean Hogan getting 0-4. Early in the second half Aidan Breen’s long free ended up in the Milltown/Castlemaine net to level the contest and with scores at premium Breen (2) and Vinnie Horan gave Ballymac the chance to win but Dara Hogan levelled.

Dr Crokes are also two from two after giving depleted Dingle a 1-21 to 0-4 dusting with veteran Kieran O’Leary getting the goal.
