Midleton GAA club has led the tributes as the east Cork town mourns the death of teenager Kacper Kozlowski, who has fought a brave battle with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, since he was just 12.

The popular sport-loving boy was bouncing on his trampoline in 2020 when he noticed a pain in his leg. Tragically, rather than an injury, osteosarcoma was diagnosed at the emergency department in Cork University Hospital.

It began a gruelling battle with the disease for Kacper, as he underwent multiple surgeries and many chemotherapy sessions at Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin.

The heavy treatment prevented Kacper playing the games he loved, as the Midleton community rallied to support the family with fundraisers for his treatment.

In 2022, Kacper's father Marcin praised the community for their efforts to help his family, describing them as "angels".

"You only need a few people you can count on," Marcin said."Those involved with Midleton GAA have also been incredible. I've never met anybody like them," he told The Echo.

The community rallied around once more when the family's home was destroyed in the flooding that hit the area last year.

Today, a statement from Midleton GAA Club read: "There is a dark cloud over Midleton GAA Club today after we heard the news of the death this morning of our juvenile player and friend Kacper Kozlwski.

"He played hurling and football with us for many years but in recent years he has fought an unbelievable battle against ill health, which he did with huge bravery and dignity.

"We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Kacper's parents Martin and Alexandra, his sister Zofia and all his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
