The Munster Hurling League between Cork and Limerick due to take place in Mallow today (2pm) has been postponed due to fog. The announcement was made a half hour before throw-in with a big crowd waiting in a long queue to get into the pitch.

Munster Council GAA CEO Kieran Leddy explained the decision.

“The fog hasn’t lifted,” he said. ‘We're at the venue with a while, the fog was lifting. It had lifted in Charleville and the hope was it would lift here. In the last half an hour it became clear that wasn’t going to happen.

“The referee (Joe Mullins from Clare) made the final decision. He felt it would be very difficult for him to see the action in the entire pitch.

“There are two criteria for any game - obviously safety of supporters and players but in fog it is about the ability to see what is going on in the pitch for players and officials.

“If you are down at one end here you cannot see what is happening at the other, 30 minutes ago you could but the sun has disappeared.

“We will be working with both counties on a re-fixture. We have the option of moving the final back a couple of days because there is a gap between the final and the start of the National League. So we have options.

“It is unfortunate. We’d have hoped this wasn’t the case. We were banking on the fog lifting, it had started and we hoped it would have kept going but it didn’t so we just took the decision that is best for the players and the officials."
