Derry, Trinity College, Meath, Wicklow, GMIT, Kildare, Fingal and Down advanced to the Bord na Mona Kehoe Cup quarter-finals, while DCU, Armagh, St Pat's Drumcondra, Mayo, Louth, Roscommon, Longford and Queens University will take part in the Shield competition.

Derry, Trinity College, Meath, Wicklow, GMIT, Kildare, Fingal and Down advanced to the Bord na Mona Kehoe Cup quarter-finals, while DCU, Armagh, St Pat's Drumcondra, Mayo, Louth, Roscommon, Longford and Queens University will take part in the Shield competition.

Ruairi Convery fired 1-9 for Derry, as the Oak Leafers made a positive start to 2014 with a hard-earned 3-13 to 2-13 win over DCU at St. Claire's.

A fourth minute Aaron Kelly goal got the visitors off to a perfect start, with Convery registering Derry's second green flag before the break as they led by 2-6 to 0-8 at the interval.

DCU kept in touch with five different first half scorers including Wexford's Tony French who scored three points before the break.

DCU drew level within five minutes of the restart thanks to a French point and a Padraig Bolger goal.

A 46th minute goal from Roscommon's Cillian Egan saw the students take the lead, but little separated the teams during the middle third of the second half.

It took a goal from Alan Grant 13 minutes from time to see Derry take control, and book a quarter-final date with Trinity College.

Trinity needed a late point from their top-scorer Colm Gleeson to register a 0-12 to 0-11 win over Armagh at Clan na nGael Fontenoy in Ringsend yesterday.

The sides were tied at 0-8 apiece at the interval, and although Mattie Lennon's seventh point earned Armagh a late lead, a brace of pointed frees from Laois man Gleeson ensured the students progressed.

Peter Durnin scored 3-7 in Meath's 5-30 to 1-7 win over St Patrick's College, Drumcondra at Trim.

Two of those goals came in the opening half, with Adam Gannon netting the other as Cillian Farrell's charges led by 3-13 to 0-5 at the break.

Goals from Paddy Conneely and Durnin arrived in the second half with Eoghan O'Neill registering a 59th minute goal for the student's as St. Pat's finished strongly but it was to little too late for the visitors.

Wicklow booked a quarter-final date with Meath following a 3-18 to 3-11 win over Mayo at Bray Emmets.

Wicklow led by 2-10 to 1-6 at half-time with goals from Christy Moorehouse and TJ Hennessy, while Kenny Feeney netted the first of his two goals for the visitors.

Feeney and Derek McDonnell goaled for Mayo inside 15 minute of the restart, but Wicklow finished strongly with a Wayne O'Gorman goal at the death.

GMIT were goal hungry as they claimed a 4-22 to 1-9 win over Louth at Darver.

The students led by 1-14 to 0-3 at half-time, and with a second-half hat-trick the paved the way for a 22-point win.

Kildare always looked comfortable as they registered a 3-26 to 0-6 win over Roscommon at Hawkfield.

The reigning champions laid the foundations for victory with first half goals from Gerry Keegan and Martin Fitzgerald helping them to a 2-12 to 0-3 interval lead.

Tipperary native Ray McLoughney kept the hosts on the front foot in the second half with 1-7 on his debut.

Fingal were goal-hungry as Longford make their return to the Kehoe Cup for the first time since 2008, following a 5-18 to 0-13 win for the Dublin outfit over Longford at Kilbarrack.

Michael Kennedy's side led by 2-7 to 0-10 at half-time with John Michael Sheridan and Colm Foley netting their goals.

Sheridan brought his tally to 3-8, with a brace of second half goals, with Andrew Richardson also netting a goal in the closing 35 minutes.

Eoin Donnellan top-scored for the visitors with six points.

Meanwhile on Saturday night at the Dub in Belfast, reigning Christy Ring Cup champions Down impressed as they delivered a 4-15 to 0-8 win over hosts Queens University Belfast.

Down led by 1-10 to 0-5 at half-time, with top-scorer James Coyle netting their goal, with further goals from Coyle, Brendan Coleman and Daniel Toner following on the restart.
