Kerry legend Paidi O'Sé dies

Retired Gaelic Football manager Paidi O'Sé has died today at the age of 57.

O'Sé played football with his local club An Ghaeltacht and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1975 until 1987.

He later served as manager of the Kerry, Westmeath, and Clare senior football teams.

O'Sé won eight All-Ireland titles with Kerry in the 70s and 80s, before going on to manage the team and winning two further All-Irelands in 1997 and 2000.

He also brought Westmeath to their first ever Leinster title in 2004.

Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan said that O'Sé will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers of his time, saying his talent, commitment and energy were legendary.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring also paid tribute to O'Sé.

"This is a sad day for Ireland, for the GAA, for Kerry, and for Irish culture," he said.

"Paidi O'Sé was a legend in so many ways. As a footballer, as a manager, and as an exponent of Irish language and culture, Paidi had few rivals.

"I would like to extend my deep sympathies to his family and friends."

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: “He will be sadly missed by all those involved with Gaelic games, by the people of Kerry and by his many friends.

“I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family at this sad time.”
