Murphy out for Tipp clash
Chris Murphy has been forced to withdraw from the Cork hurling panel ahead of the Munster SHC opener against Tipperary at Semple Stadium on May 31.
The 24-year-old corner-back made the decision to pull out of the squad due to a combination of illness and exam commitments.
Murphy was substituted in the National League defeat to Waterford at Páirc Uí Chaoímh after breaking his chin bone, after which he suffered from a bout of vertigo.
Cork’s preparations for the meeting with Tipperary have been going well in recent weeks, with the Rebels recording comprehensive wins over Dublin and Limerick in challenge matches.
However, Denis Walsh will have been disappointed to learn of Murphy’s withdrawal as the versatile defender had enjoyed a very impressive league campaign
The Blackrock man, who is one of the few remaining members of the ’09 panel involved, appeared to have his place in the championship starting line-up nailed down, after Brian Murphy confirmed his intention to retire from inter-county.
Erin's Own’s Shane Murphy and Conor O’Sullivan of Sarsfield's started Saturday’s win over Limerick in the corner-back positions, while Shane O’Neill is a certain starter for the game in Thurles.
Chris Murphy, however, intends to return to training when his exam commitments have been fulfilled in a few weeks time, so he may yet be available later in the season.
The Rebels are set to play challenge matches tonight and tomorrow night as Denis Walsh and his selectors weigh up their options head of the Tipp clash on Sunday week.
A Cork selection will take on the intermediate side tonight, while tomorrow they travel to Thurles for a behind closed doors match against Wexford.
Meanwhile U21s Noel Galvin, CIarán Sheehan, Colm O’Neill and Aidan Walsh have joined the senior football panel.
