GAA respond to Cody criticisms

The GAA’s National Referee’s Committee (Coiste na Réiteoirí) have today issued a statement in response to Brian Cody’s recent criticisms.

The Kilkenny manager had suggested that an independent committee should be established to examine standard of GAA referees.

“The system whereby referees in championship and league games are assessed has been in place for many years,” the statement read.

“It is a process that referees are happy with and one they view as both educational and supportive.

“Indeed, the experience of Coiste na Réiteoirí has been that referees are disappointed if for any reason they are not assessed.

“Those involved with teams, including the players themselves, want consistent application of the rules and to try to attain this, intercounty referees meet regularly.

“These meetings consist of guest speakers on relevant topics i.e. fitness, mental preparation etc, discussions on previous games and advice and direction on rules, umpires, linesmen and other match related matters.”
