Ger Loughnane was robbed of his first real chance to run the rule over Galway's hurling talent as a waterlogged pitch saw today's Connacht Hurling League tie between the Galway Development squad and Roscommon called off.

Torrential rain meant the pitch at Fuerty in Roscommon was deemed unplayable and the decision to postpone the fixture was made shortly before the 2pm throw-in time.

Loughnane commented: "It was disappointing not to be able to go ahead with the match given the efforts both squads had made, but there was no point in trying to play in those sort of conditions."

The former Clare boss, who has been working his new charges at Ballybrit racecourse and other venues around the county, had his main Galway squad out training at Ballinderreen this morning before he and his managment team headed for Roscommon.

The three other games in the Connacht Hurling League went ahead this afternoon - in Section B, GMIT and NUI Galway recorded wins over Sligo IT (1-11 to 2-4) and Mayo (2-13 to 0-12) respectively.

In Section A, from which the Galway Development side will expect to progress, Sligo got a first day success when they edged past Leitrim at Tubbercurry, winning by 1-8 to 1-7.
