Fevola cautioned by Gardaí
Aussie Rules football star Brendan Fevola was tonight cautioned by gardaí over an assault on a barman in Galway.
The player, who had been due to line out in yesterday's International Rules match against Ireland in Croke Park, was accused of attacking a manager at the Imperial Hotel in the city over a week ago.
He left the country last Monday after being told he would play no part in the international series.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras in the hotel.
It is understood he travelled to Europe and returned to Galway today to meet senior gardaí.
He was cautioned under the Adult Cautionary Scheme. The system was introduced into Irish law earlier this year and is an extension of the often-used Juvenile Liaison Scheme caution, given to youngsters for misdemeanours.
The decision to caution him is an indication the incident was not deserving of a court charge and appearance.
A spokeswoman at the Garda Press Office said the decision was taken following consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions and the matter was now closed.
A barman at the Imperial Hotel alleged that Fevola, who plays for the Carlton Blues in Melbourne, assaulted him by grabbing him and putting him in a headlock.
The incident occurred last week following a day at the Galway races.
Fevola was interviewed by gardaí and a full investigation by officials from the Australian Football League was launched.
The Australian team's disciplinary council met and ruled that Fevola was guilty of unacceptable behaviour. He was then sent home.
