Butler is new hurling coordinator
Tipperary man Paudie Butler has been confirmed as the GAA's new National Hurling Coordinator.
The position, which carries an attractive salary and expenses package, was advertised as far back as 2004 but the GAA and the HDC (Hurling Development Committee) feel they have finally got their man.
Interviews took place last month with former Tipperary star Nicky English sitting in on the panel. Five men were interviewed for the job with Waterford man Joey Carton, Munster GAA Games manager, and TG4 commentator and journalist MacDara NcDonnacha both putting their names forward.
However, the hugely-experienced Butler was chosen and he will take up the position later in the year.
Hailing from Drombane, Thurles, Butler played hurling at all levels for Tipperary and for his club Drom-Inch with whom he has been heavily involved as a coach. He was also involved as a coach at club level with Newport, Moneygall, Doon (Limerick) and Silvermines.
At inter-county level, he coached the Tipperary minors to three Munster Championships and was also involved with the Tipperary U21 team. Most recently, he enjoyed a successful spell as manager of the Laois senior hurlers and was manager of the Ireland U-21 hurling/shinty team for four years.
Currently employed as a Primary School principal in his native Drom-Inch, he is married to Miriam and they have four children.
