Bannermen hold off Galway revival

Anthony Daly's Clare went top of Division 1A of the NHL as they held on for victory against Galway at Salthill today.

Clare, without the suspended Davy Fitzgerald, raced into an early lead and the game looked beyond Galway three minutes before half-time when Frank Lohan rifled home after 32 minutes.

But the Tribesmen made a late recovery in the first half as Eugene Cloonan goalled from a free and a further score for Galway left them trailing 1-3 to 1-14 at half-time.

In the second half, playing with the wind, it was all Galway.

Galway chipped away at Clare's advantage and held them to just one score in the second half.

Clare defender Brian O'Connell was sent off with 10 minutes remaining to put further pressure on the Bannermen.

When David Tierney scored from a sideline cut, the deficit was reduced to three points, 1-12 to 1-15.

But the clock beat Galway and Clare just held on for the win.
