Henry Shefflin has ‘huge earning potential’
The 10-time All-Ireland medallist was immediately approached by television companies following last month’s high profile retirement with a view to working as a Championship analyst.
Kilkenny superstar Shefflin has also been engaged by the print media about penning a column as well as by radio outlets. His autobiography is currently being worked upon.
Industry insiders have suggested that allied to his various ambassadorial roles with private companies he has the potential to rake in €50,000 this year alone.
Marketing expert Michael O’Keeffe, chief executive of PSG communications, declined to speculate how much exactly Shefflin may be worth as a pundit but said the Ballyhale Shamrocks man has put himself in a perfect position to capitalise on his profile.
“From a marketing perspective, he has never over-exposed himself and picks his brands carefully,” said O’Keeffe, a former Dublin footballer. “He has huge potential to remain as a brand ambassador due to his status.
“He will undoubtedly become a media pundit and will continue in his role with Bank of Ireland where he does hugely important work for the company. Shefflin is also a sports personality that appeals to non-hurling fans and people from all walks of life.
“Unusually for a hurler, he is instantly recognisable, due mainly to his work for brands and media appearances as well as the many iconic on-field celebrations pictures. His earning potential is huge and rightly so. He will not fade over time and, like Brian O’Driscoll, he will remain a national sporting star long after retirement.”
Shefflin appeared as a brand ambassador for Kellogg’s earlier this week at the launch of the 2015 Cul Camps for children. Asked if he was to become a TV pundit for Sky Sports, he said no decision had been made yet. A bookmaker yesterday pencilled him in as favourite to take on a role with RTE.
