‘Home wins can’t be taken for granted’

Mayo captain Keith Higgins admits no county in Division 1 can bank on home fixtures to provide them with victories.

‘Home wins can’t be taken for granted’

After taking the spoils in Killarney on Sunday, Higgins and his colleagues welcome a bruised Tyrone to Elverys MacHale Park this weekend. Like Healy Park for Mickey Harte’s side and Fitzgerald Stadium and Austin Stack Park for Kerry, Castlebar hasn’t been a fortress for Mayo in recent seasons although they enjoyed a 100% record last year. But interestingly, of last year’s 28 games in the top flight just 16 were won by the home team.

Higgins recalls Mayo under James Horan targeted home games but said it’s a difficult aspiration nowadays. “We would have mentioned it a couple of years ago and we were trying to win all our home games but obviously that didn’t go to plan a lot of the years! It comes down to the way the league has become so competitive that you can’t rely on your home games. It’s something you’d like to happen but it’s about getting a performance on the day. If you win your home games great.”
