Gaelic games to feature during Brazil’s World Cup

Brazil’s 196 million citizens will get a taste of Gaelic football when the country hosts next year’s World Cup.

Award-winning Rio de Janiero-based production company Pindorama Filmes will travel to Ireland this September to film a documentary on the game.

The 25-minute programme will be televised on national television during the tournament and will show footage from this year’s All-Ireland SFC final.

Gaelic games is one of five sports which will feature in a five-part series celebrating ball games other than soccer. Pindorama Filmes intend on speaking to a number of the biggest inter-county names as well as GAA officials and historians. RTÉ has already agreed to provide archive footage to the company.

The Brazilians are also keen to visit a factory where a ball is manufactured.

News of the documentary represents another promotional boost for the GAA. Last month , an exhibition of Gaelic football was played by Éire Óg Sevilla during the half-time interval in a La Liga Primera Division game at Seville’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

In February last year, hurling was showcased prior to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis by the local club. The hurling club’s display in the city’s Superbowl village was watched by millions of people. The same month, Chinese vice-president Xi Jinping’s visit to Croke Park was also seen by millions back in China.
