Dr Crokes scoop Munster Club award
The Kerry side were chosen as the 2012 Bord Gáis Energy Munster GAA Club of the Year, having won their third Kerry senior football title in a row. Not only are they looking for back-to-back wins in the provincial competition this weekend, they have also won numerous titles at junior and underage level this year.
In addition, Limerick’s Michael McDonnell was announced winner of the Special Merit Award. The Limerick native has a lifelong association with the GAA at club, divisional and county level.
Michael played at all levels with Croom and has served as an administrator at Limerick county and divisional board level at both senior and Bord na nOg level.
He was also the driving force behind the Mick Neville Park development in recent years serving as secretary of the development committee. Speaking on the announcement of these winners, Bord Gáis Energy GAA Ambassador Ger Cunningham said “Michael has been involved with the GAA for so many years and has given so much to the sport both on and off the field.
“I am delighted that his dedication and commitment is being honoured with this prestigious award.”
Munster GAA chairman Sean Walsh said: “Dr Crokes are a most deserving winner of the Club of the Year title. Having worked hard at underage level in recent years, they are now enjoying a run of success in the Club Championship culminating in their three in-a-row of Kerry Senior football titles recently.
“Michael McDonnell is a most deserving winner of the Special Merit award having served the GAA in many capacities over a long association with the GAA in Limerick”.
Other winners were Clare’s Fiona Laverty as Camogie Player of the Year, Cork’s Brid Stack, who took the Ladies Footballer of the Year award and Tipperary’s John Ferncombe who was named Handballer of the Year. The Awards take place on Saturday, December 1, at 8pm in the Malton, Killarney.
