Mitchelstown eyeing semi-final spot after win over Barrs

Mitchelstown kept up their strong start to the McCarthy Insurance Group Intermediate A Football Championship with another impressive victory, defeating St Finbarr’s second string 1-19 to 0-14, and putting themselves in a strong position to progress straight to the semi-final.

Aaron O’Brien top-scored with 1-6 as they were without Cathail O’Mahony, while his Cork teammate Seán Walsh chipped in with six points in their Group 2 encounter. Stephen Kenneally and Michael Walsh each hit 0-2 in their victory.

Evan Murphy grabbed 2-1 including a penalty as Dromtarriffe saw off Gabriel Rangers by two points in the other Group 2 clash. Conor O’Callaghan raised two orange flags, while Darren O’Connor kicked 1-1.

The sides had been tied 3-13 apiece until Dromtarriffe grabbed the final two points to take the win. In Group 1, A late point from Thomas Collins completed the unlikeliest of comebacks for Kilmurry, as they battled back from seven points down at half-time to edge out Buttevant by a point, 0-16 to 2-9.

Buttevant had dominated the opening period to power seven clear, Mark Lenahan and Conor Hanlon raising the green flags, but, after the loss of David Hanlon to injury, the suffered a sickening second-half collapse as Kilmurry turned the game on its head.

Kilmurry fought back brilliantly, Denis O’Mullane scoring 0-5 in that half, including the two-pointer to level it on the hour, after Collins had raised an orange flag three minutes prior.

Collins then notched one more white flag in added time to take the win. Jamie Whelan, Aaron Trimm, Michael O’Neill and Conor Hanlon showed up well for Buttevant, but their failure to score in the last 22 minutes of the game proved costly.

In the other Group 1 game, Ilen Rovers picked up a second straight win, defeating Glanworth 1-18 to 0-14. Michael Sheehy scored two two-pointers in a haul of 0-6, while Adrian O’Driscoll notched 0-6 too, including 0-3 from play. Sean Minehane grabbed the goal, as Glanworth are now at risk of relegation with a -27 scoring difference.

In Group 3, Cian O’Shea scored 0-5 for Adrigole as they saw off Boherbue by the minimum, 0-12 to 0-11 in Dunmanway. Charlie O’Sullivan raised two orange flags in that contest, and the result now moves Adrigole to the top of Group 3 with four points. Boherbue remain second with two after Kildorrery and Bandon shared the spoils in the other game, where the west Cork outfit needed a last gasp two-point free from Mark Sugrue to secure the draw.

Early goal opportunities that had gone astray almost left Bandon facing defeat, but Sugrue showed his nerve late on to take his tally to 0-5 in their 1-8 to 0-11 draw.

Kieran Hurley netted the Kildorrery goal after being set up by Cian Coughlan, while Shane O’Neill and Will Fouhy each kicked 0-2 for Kildorrery. Jack Cullinane finished with 0-3 (1 tp) for Bandon.

In the Premier Junior Football Championship, northside rivals St Nick’s and Na Piarsaigh clashed in St Vincent’s, with Nick’s emerging comfortable winners on a scoreline of 6-12 to 2-5 in Group 3.

Kieran Kelleher led the way with 2-1, while Jack O’Sullivan and Conor McCarthy each scored 1-2. Rhys Dunne and Eoin Downey netted the other goals, as Oisin O’Connell, Zach Lynch and Fiacra O’Driscoll all impressed. Na Piarsaigh are now under serious pressure of suffering of a third relegation in four years.

Colin McCarthy tallied 0-6 from placed balls including a two-point free for Kilmacabea, as they kicked the last two scores to finish level at 0-10 apiece with Canovee in the other Group 3 game.

Group 2 in the Premier Junior Football Championship remains the most finely poised, as Inniscarra got back on track with a 1-11 to 1-8 win over Urhan to move up to second. The Beara outfit are now under pressure having yet to pick up a win from their first two games.

Liam O’Connor and Daniel Murphy led the way for the Muskerry men, scoring 1-5 and 0-5 respectively, while Ben Sullivan top-scored for Urhan with 1-2.

East Cork sides Cobh and Glenville played out an 0-11 to 1-8 draw in their Group 2 encounter, Liam Foley’s goal right at the death levelling it for Glenville in dramatic fashion.

Glenville had led early before Cobh hit four on the spin to move two clear, and they preserved that lead at the break, 0-6 to 0-4.

The margin was 0-9 to 0-8 in favour of Cobh, but when George Keating and Adam Lynch added points to push them three clear, they looked to have it over the line. That was until Foley popped up at the end with his goal to snatch a point for Glenville, ensuring a final day battle between all four teams, who can still mathematically make it out of the group.

In Group 1, Kinsale made it two wins from two with a comfortable victory over Cullen, 1-16 to 0-10, while Millstreet saw off winless St Vincent’s, 3-17 to 1-15.
