Louth players may face sanction for ref remarks

A number of Louth players could be forced by the GAA to apologise for comments about referee Derek Fahy following Sunday’s All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Westmeath.

Louth players may face sanction for ref remarks

Darren Clarke, who along with Mark Brennan was one of two members of his team sent off by Fahy in the first-half, described the Longford man’s decision to dismiss him as “farcical”.

“Gutted! Same Ref sent off 5 Louth players in 3 games, #GAA needs to take a look into their performances #farcical, with 14 we wud of won!,” he wrote on Twitter.

Ronan Carroll, who did not start because of injury, was equally scathing of Fahy, although his unfounded claim that the referee showed bias could land him in more trouble.

“Disappointed that I wasn’t fit to play yesterday, the game just came too soon. All the lads put in trojan work but this was undone by the ref.

“One of the most biased performances i has seen and made critical errors. He was the same V Carlow last yr. Better not see him again #Joke”

Corner-forward Derek Crilly tweeted: “Referees performance was disgraceful and he has now sent 5 Louth players off in last 3 games and robbed the Pats in Leinster club.”

Last year, Anthony Masterson wrote an apology to Fahy after comments he made in a post-match interview.

The Wexford goalkeeper was instructed by the Central Competitions Control Committee that (CCCC) he would face an eight-week ban if he did not offer up contrite correspondence to Fahy.

Masterson was found by the CCCC to have breached a regulation regarding pre and post-match interviews.

As yet, the GAA have no rules governing players’ comments on Twitter but are certain to take a dim view of what has been written by players about one of their officials.

Meanwhile, Meath’s Kevin Reilly was critical of David Coldrick’s performance in the Ulster semi-final between Donegal and Tyrone.

“Dave Coldrick has let Donegal away with delaying play all day. Teams cannot get away with these professional fouls. Ruining the game.”
