Brave Tribesmen end Sligo’s reign

Galway’s powerful showing in the first period of extra-time dumped the holders, Sligo, out of the Connacht Junior Championship in last night’s quarter-final at Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry.

Brave Tribesmen end Sligo’s reign

Peadar Seoighe’s last-gasp point levelled matters at 1-10 to 0-13 and during the additional 20 minutes they shone against the 2010 All-Ireland junior champions, with Martin Coady impressive, as the winners led 1-15 to 0-13 midway through the additional period.

Galway, with the aid of the breeze for the first half of normal time, were wasteful and only had Eoin Joyce’s early point to show for their efforts after 15 minutes.

The home side, initially sluggish, found a rhythm as they led 0-4 to 0-2 by the 24th minute — Brian Egan and Niall Murphy making their mark — but another Joyce score, his third, and a fisted point from Martin Coady ensured parity at the interval, 0-4 apiece.

Three unanswered points inside the opening five minutes of the second half settled Sligo and they dominated until a goal from Cathal Coleman inspired a Galway recovery.
