Johnston saga nears end game

Seanie Johnston’s protracted transfer saga could be over with speculation now that the Cavan player will be remaining with the county.

Local newspaper The Anglo-Celt yesterday quoted an unnamed Cavan County Board official saying the Cavan Gaels player’s switch to Kildare is “dead in the water”.

Cavan had raised questions about whether Johnston was living permanently in Kildare, as is required to make the move, and explained their stance to the Central Competitions Control Committee on Monday night.

It’s believed the GAA have sought legal advice on the matter.

Speaking last night, Cavan PRO Declan Woods said Johnston’s case was never sent back to the county. “Under no circumstances was it (the case) referred back to Cavan.

“That was misreported. It has nothing to do with us anymore.

“There is a right bit of speculation, which has been prompted by Seanie himself training with his own club (Cavan Gaels) last week.

“Then the visit of Cavan to Croke Park on Monday added to it but everything is speculation. We have had no discussion behind the scenes. Our chairman and secretary were in Croke Park to verbally give their version and that was it. There was no big interview, no masses of facts.”
