O’Mahony: pay TV move closer

MAYO boss John O’Mahony has described Setanta’s decision to broadcast National League matches on their subscription channel as “another progression” to pay-per-view and called on GAA chiefs to explain how this policy has developed.

O’Mahony: pay TV move closer

“The GAA follower has always been ring-fenced from pay per view and we need explanations, to be honest. It does seem that this is another progression to pay-per-view. That was never meant to be the GAA’s idea. I’d like to hear the GAA’s explanation. I haven’t looked into it yet but I meant to talk to the GAA and Pádraic (Duffy). I don’t blame Setanta, they are a company who have to broaden their coverage. But whatever happens I think GAA games should be accessible to everyone and shouldn’t be pay-per-view.”

O’Mahony revealed that he is heartened by Mayo’s promising start to this season but warned that they face some “horrendous games” before the close of their league campaign.

“It’s a good start with a lot of players unavailable to us. Mayo have been in a couple of minor finals, and had an under-21 success the last few years, and those lads are beginning to come through.

“I think it is beginning to take shape. But we’re no finished article. When you look at Division 1, we have Derry, Cork and Kerry away yet. They’re going to be horrendous games. But to give ourselves a bit of a cushion is good. And we won the Tyrone game in different circumstances to the Galway game. It was a grind out, without being spectacular, and it’s good to expose young players to that type of experience as well.”
