Depleted Deise hopeful Browne will be ready for Tipp test

TONY BROWNE is the latest injury worry for Waterford ahead of Sunday’s Munster SHC semi-final against Tipperary at Páirc Uí Chaoímh.

The former Hurler of the Year sustained a leg injury in a game played behind closed doors against Wexford in New Ross on Thursday.

The Mount Sion clubman has been receiving daily treatment since and Waterford bosses are hopeful that he will be fit.

Club mate Ken McGrath remains doubtful for the tie after sustaining a broken thumb in a local championship tie last month. The cast was removed earlier this week, and though he has taken part in all the physical training sessions with both club and county in the interim, he has not played any hurling for the past four weeks.

John Mullane is a definite non starter, as he is still recovering from a fractured bone in his arm sustained in a challenge game against the Wexford U21 side.

“It’s a desperate situation in which we find ourselves,” long serving county secretary Seamas Grant said yesterday.

“If, as looks likely, we will be without all three All-stars (McGrath, Mullane, and Kelly) it’s a dire position to be in against a Tipperary side that is certain to be cock-a-hoop following their tremendous first round victory over Limerick,” Grant said.

“Even a team with Cork’s seemingly unlimited resources would feel the pinch if they were forced to go into championship battle without three of their most celebrated stars,” he added.

The team will not be finalised until after tomorrow night’s final light training session.
