Mulcahy could make surprise Cork return in Munster final
Out of action with a broken wrist following car accident, he returned to club duty at the weekend in a County League game against Castlelyons and showed no ill effects of his long lay-off.
Mulcahy’s availability would strengthen Cork’s chances of retaining their Munster title but he still has some way to go before he is fully fit.
For the record, Newtown won the game 1-15 to 0-12 with Mulcahy starring in his customary centre back position.
An added boost for Cork was Brian Corcoran’s display against Clare in a challenge game in Cusack Park at the weekend.
Pitted against Brian Lohan, Corcoran knocked in a hat-trick of goals as the home side emerged two point winners in a high scoring game.
Another plus was good form shown by Garvan McCarthy when introduced. An All-Ireland minor medal winner in 1998, the Sarsfields player could well have staked a claim to a place on the bench for the Munster final.
With Brian Whelahan and Rory Hanniffy available for duty again, Offaly have named their strongest side to meet Dublin in next Sunday's Leinster SHC semi-final against Dublin at Croke Park.
Both missed the quarter final victory over Laois but have been restored to their normal right half-back and centre-forward berths.
Whelahan takes over from Kevin Brady, while the inclusion of Hanniffy on the forty, sees Barry Whelan moving to midfield to the exclusion of Neville Coughlan. The only other change is at right corner back, with Barry Teehan filling in for Mike O'Hara, who has emigrated to the U.S.
Tyrone manager Mickey Harte last night revealed that Peter Canavan will be in the dug-out for the All-Ireland champions Ulster SFC clash with Donegal at Clones on Sunday.
The inspirational Canavan, who captained Tyrone to their historic success last September, underwent surgery to repair damaged ankle ligaments early this year and although missing out on the Red Hands National League campaign is now back in training.
Harte said that Canavan won't start on Sunday but that he may be sprung from the bench if his side come under pressure.
Present captain Brian Dooher is a doubtful starter. The Tyrone right half forward picked up a medial knee ligament injury in a club game and was forced to miss the champions victory over Fermanagh last time out.
Kevin Cassidy has been ruled out of the Donegal team because of a knee injury, but Michael Hegarty and full forward Brendan Devenney, who have been sidelined lately because of injury and flu are both expected to be names.
Both teams are expected to be announced tonight.
Roscommon, who meet Lietrim in the Connacht SFC semi final, will select their team on Thursday but manager Tommy Carr said yesterday that he has no injury problems.
Laois will name their team to play Meath in the Leinster SFC also on Thursday night. But as in the case of Roscommon Mick O'Dwyer is in the happy position of having a clean bill of health.
Wexford corner-back Colm Morris remains suspended for Sunday week’s Leinster SFC semi-final against Westmeath.
Morris, who received a red card in the closing minutes of their victory over Kildare, was unsuccessful in his appeal against the decision of referee Michael Curley.
Morris will serve a one month suspension.
Fresh from their senior victory over Cork at the weekend, Kerry turn their attentions to the under 21 grade tonight when they entertain Clare in round one of the Munster championship in Tralee (7.30 p.m.).
Kerry will include two seniors, Declan O’Sullivan at centre forward, and Colm Cooper, at left corner forward, and the highly rated Brian Sheehan at full forward. Full back Brendan O’Mahony was a senior sub last Sunday.
Sheehan enjoyed an excellent first season with Cork IT helping them to the semi-final of this year’s Sigerson Cup which they lost to eventual champions Sligo IT.
O’Sullivan and Sheehan had the distinction of captaining Colaiste na Sceilge to Corn Uí Mhuirí honours in 2001 and 2003 respectively.
Notable among the substitutes is Ambrose O’Donovan, son of former senior stalwart of the same name.
