Kennellys head Down Under to support Tadhg

THESE are exciting times for Tim Kennelly and family. On Sunday week son Noel will be part of the Kerry squad bidding to retain their All-Ireland SFC title against Tyrone.

Kennellys head Down Under to support Tadhg

But that drama can wait.

Tim, an All-Ireland winning captain, and his wife Nuala yesterday left for Australia so they can support their youngest son Tadhg contest the AFL Preliminary Finals in the Melbourne Cricket Ground tomorrow night. Brother Noel and uncle Mike are also heading Down Under.

The 25 year-old has been a revelation since joining the Sydney Swans in 1999 and tomorrow's game against St Kildas, before 85,000 people, represents the biggest game of his Aussie Rules career.

"This is huge, it is the same as an All-Ireland semi-final," Kennelly senior admitted yesterday.

"We were talking to him as late as last night (Tuesday) and he was started to get a bit keyed up.

"Not alone is it the biggest game of his career but it is also his 100th game in the AFL Premiership and that means that he will have the honour of leading the team out in the MCG.

"He is in good form and looking forward to seeing to this. We were over in June because they were mid-table but then they turned their season around and look at them now."

The pride is obvious. "We are very, very proud of him what he has done and achieved. It took a lot of nerve and balls to do it. He has really worked hard and done so much and hopefully the success will continue."

If that success is to continue, the Swans must win it's first finals game at the G since 1936 before facing the winners of West Coast and Adelaide. The decider is fixed for Saturday week the eve of the All-Ireland SFC final.

"It's a tough one," Tim adds. "An All-Ireland final and a Premiership final but if they win we would have to stay on. Noel is coming back early next week. It is a little strange missing Race Week in Listowel but to be honest I don't mind too much because I am happy to be missing the build up to the match. The demand and the roaring for tickets has been unbelievable."

Not that he is complaining.
