Ó Se's fate to be decided by Kerry County Board

KERRY GAA officials will meet tonight to discuss the referee’s report and deliberate on Darragh Ó Sé’s All-Ireland semi-final fate in the wake of Sunday’s controversial county SFC clash between An Ghaeltacht and Austin Stacks.

Castleisland match official Tom McCarthy is due to present his version of events to the County Board’s general purposes committee for consideration today.

If the experienced McCarthy follows through his decision to show Ó Sé a straight red card for an alleged elbow on Stacks defender Brian Dennehy, the Gaeltacht midfielder will miss the Croke Park clash with rivals Cork on Sunday week.

McCarthy will have to state in the report that he did not see the incident personally and was briefed by two of his umpires, both also from Castleisland. Austin Stacks players were adamant that the Gaeltacht star came into contact with Dennehy in the 6th minute of the game, but board officials and representatives from both clubs shied away from public comment yesterday. Not surprisingly, the central players in the controversy are under intense local media and community scrutiny.

One County Board official revealed that the match officials involved were subjected to unfair attention yesterday, with radio phone-ins and commentators slamming the decision to dismiss Ó Sé.

Naturally, the controversy is being monitored closely across the county, with the Enda Galvin saga in North Kerry still fresh in the minds of some GAA observers.

Kerry coach Paidi Ó Sé, who was at the game, was unavailable for comment yesterday, but he must consider a re-jigging of his formation for the Cork game on the basis that his captain and nephew will be absent.

Though Kerins O’Rahillys’ Barry O’Shea can slot in at full-back, the selectors may be loathe to take Seamus Moynihan from the edge of the square to resolve their midfield dilemma. That could mean Eoin Brosnan reverting to midfield with Donal Daly and Liam Hassett moving to the 40. Aodhan MacGearailt would be promoted from the bench in that scenario.
