Motorsport: Keohane races into second

Cork racing ace, Michael Keohane, moved into second spot in the British Formula 3 Scholarship Class, courtesy of a fine second place in the second race of the fifth round double header at Croft.

Having clawed his way to fifth place in the opening race after starting at the back of the grid, a position he was relegated to when the Clerk of the Course reckoned he was late arriving at the holding area, Keohane was in determined mood entering the second race.

On the start, he passed championship leader, Matthew Gilmore and as the race progressed, the Clonakilty driver moved closer to Robbie Kerr. On one occasion, he almost passed his British rival but was forced to back off when Kerr closed his overtaking manoeuvre.

On the closing laps, it began to rain and Keohane and his Meritus team decided to hold second for those valuable 15 championship points. Kerr took the race victory.

With Gilmore finishing last due to a damaged nose cone, Keohane is now just 15 points behind. Kerr is in third spot, eight points behind Keohane.

Meanwhile, Irish drivers, Colin Turkington and Eoin Murray were second and fourth respectively in the fifth round of the Ford Fiesta Challenge.

Murray was making his debut with his new team, Stancombe.
