Golden boy Smyth battles on two fronts

Ireland’s medal ambitions for the 2016 Paralympic Games received an unexpected boost yesterday with news the world’s fastest Paralympian, Jason Smyth, will now be in a position to compete in two events in Rio de Janeiro.

Golden boy Smyth battles on two fronts

The four-time gold medal winner has been competing in the T13 class at 100m and 200m, both of which he won twice, in 2008 and 2012. However, the T13 200m was dropped from the 2016 programme.

Smyth was busy preparing for the Paralympic Athletics European Championships, which starts in Swansea tomorrow, when he heard that he been reclassified from the T13 to the T12 class due to the progression of his visual impairment Stargardts disease. The standard of athlete in the T12 class is marginally slower — some athletes race with guides — meaning the chances of double gold in Brazil are greater.
