Top spot for True Pennance

RACE 3 of the CH Marine Winter League at RCYC got underway on a misty morning, with a light southerly breeze in stark contrast to last week’s heavy winds.

Top spot for True Pennance

Race officer Mark Bushe opted for course 69, a course normally done using a boat start from Corkbeg and one of the few in-harbour courses not to feature Cage as a mark in round 1.

Not that this stopped several boats from including it by way of a diversion! After the all-in start and a beat down to E2 at Roches Point it was a long run downwind to No 14, then back to Corkbeg. The second round was back down to No 7 where Whitesail and Class 3 had a shortened course finish as the winds began to die and the ebb tide strengthened, for the remainder it was down to No 5 and the finish at Grassy.

In Class 1, Martin Darrer’s True Pennance took IRC and second in Echo. Frank Doyle’s Endgame took second in IRC and third in Echo with Aidan Heffernan’s Indulgence taking Echo and third in IRC.

In Class 2 Ian Hickey’s Cavatina stole the edge on Kieran and Liz O’Brien’s Magnet to take both IRC and Echo, with Magnet second in IRC and third in Echo. They were joined by Len Donnery’s No Gnomes taking second in Echo and third in IRC.

Class 3 went to Kieran O’Connell’s Bandit in IRC and third in Echo with the Sullivan Brothers Running Wild taking second but winning Echo. Michael Murphy’s Shelly D took second in Echo. Diarmuid Foley’s Anchor Challenge took third in IRC. In the 1720 class it was Denis Murphy on Aquatack who got the better of the Deasy/Ivers/Horgan team on Bad Company.

Whitesail IRC went to Alan Mulcahy’s Sundancer as well as taking second in Echo just a few seconds behind Peter Webster’s Thistle. John Rice’s Eagle took second in IRC. Third in both IRC and Echo went to Micheal Lynch’s Lady T.

This coming weekend sees the Irish Cruiser Racing Association Conference get underway in Dun Laoghaire and one of the more controversial items on the agenda will be the clash of fixtures between the long-established and hugely popular Round Ireland Race starting from Wicklow Sailing Club and a newly announced race starting and finishing in Galway.

lSouth Coast Offshore Racing Association (SCORA) AGM and prize-giving will take place at RCYC on Friday December 9, at 7.30pm.
