Six-touchdowns Favre has Jets flying high again

BRETT FAVRE has returned to his record-setting ways with the New York Jets as Washington rocked old rivals Dallas in the NFL.

Favre tied Joe Namath’s 36-year-old Jets team record Sunday with a career-high six touchdowns, including three to Laveranues Coles in a record 34-point second quarter, as New York beat Arizona 56-35.

“Throwing six touchdown passes was awesome,” said Favre, who played on a sore ankle that has bothered him since a third-quarter sack in a loss to San Diego on Monday.

“I’m pleased because it was a win. I’ve won some games before and have been a part of some great wins where I threw no touchdowns and several picks. Those wins were just as sweet as a win like this.”

Favre, the former Green Bay great, completed 24-of-34 attempts for 289 yards and the Jets built a 34-0 halftime lead despite being held scoreless in the first quarter.

Coles had eight receptions for 105 yards, with all three scoring strikes coming in the second quarter.

“Anytime you have somebody like a Brett Favre walk through the door, you have to be excited about it and look forward to the opportunities he’s going to bring you,” Coles said.

The wild ride included a frightening injury to Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was stretchered off the field after he was hit hard in mid-air by Jets safety Eric Smith with less than a minute to play.

Boldin was limp when he hit the ground, and players from both teams left the bench and came together in a circle as medical staff attended him.

Boldin was alert and had movement in his extremities when he was taken to hospital for observation.

The 34-point second quarter broke the eight-year-old Jets record for points in a period, set in October 2000 against Miami.

In Dallas, the Redskins staked their claim to be considered contenders in the rugged NFC East, handing the Cowboys their first defeat of the season 26-24.

The Redskins have won three in a row in the wake of their season-opening 16-7 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion and division rival New York Giants to climb into a second-place tie with the Cowboys at 3-1.

Jason Campbell passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns, Santana Moss had eight catches for 145 yards and Clinton Portis rushed for 121 yards on 21 carries for the Redskins.

The NFC East’s other team, the Philadelphia Eagles, fell to 2-2 with a 24-20 loss at Chicago.

Tennessee and Buffalo both remained unbeaten, the Titans with a 30-17 victory over Minnesota that saw rookie Chris Johnson rush for two touchdowns.

The Bills rallied with 25 second-half points in a 31-14 victory over St Louis. San Diego also erased a deficit to beat Oakland 28-18.

Kansas City snapped a 12-game losing streak, nabbing a 33-19 victory over Denver.

The Cleveland Browns secured their first win of the season, Jamal Lewis scoring on a one-yard plunge early in the fourth in a 20-12 triumph over winless Cincinnati.

Josh Scobee converted a 37-yarder field goal in overtime to lift Jacksonville to a 30-27 victory over Houston. Tampa Bay defeated Green Bay 30-21, New Orleans defeated San Francisco 31-17 and Carolina downed Atlanta 24-9.
