Colin Sheridan: Life beyond Liverpool already unpredictable for Caoimhín Kelleher

A penny for Caoimhín Kelleher’s thoughts. Just days after signing for Brentford AFC, Tottenham Hotspur - a team that finished last season seven places below his new club in the Premier League - sacked their manager and were immediately linked with Thomas Frank, the head coach Kelleher had just agreed to join in West London.
Clubs do not “announce” starting goalkeepers, but, like a quarterback in the NFL, the position has become the centre of gravity around which all teams are built. Any confusion on who your number one is inevitably ends in disaster. Injuries happen and doors for deputies open, just as they did with Kelleher at Liverpool, but being certain who your starting goalie is on opening day is a must for any manager. For a goalie, being certain who your manager will be is an entirely different matter.
