Colin Sheridan: Is there a danger Galway are the new Mayo?

THE NEW MAYO? Two counties, then, on two different journeys that may well end up in the same place. It seems ridiculous to think another decade could pass without either bringing an All-Ireland across the Shannon. Pic: Seb Daly/Sportsfile
When Galway traveled to Castlebar to trounce Mayo in the Allianz Football League last Sunday, it brought together a pair of counties that accounted for four of the losing finalists from the five All-Irelands this decade. Given that Mayo lost the same number – four - from 2012 to 2019, this representation is hardly anything novel nor worthy of regurgitation in the context of that team's psychology.
“Losers get naaathing,” DJ Kane told his Down teammates halfway through an All-Ireland they ultimately won, and everyone in Mayo sadly knows he’s right. If Galway are to learn anything from their next door neighbours' travails, it is this: Win while you can, because the good times don’t last forever.
