Colin Sheridan: GAA should learn that if you're good enough you're old enough
YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Luke Littler celebrates after winning against Christian Kist.
I never thought I’d be referencing Gwyneth Paltrow and her ex-husband Chris Martin in a sports column. Not unless one or both were joining Kilmacud Crokes, but there’s a certain word that has crept into the GAA lexicon and every time I hear it, I think of the celebrity pair. ‘Decoupling’, to be entirely confused with ‘uncoupling,’ as in conscious uncoupling, which is, of course, what Paltrow and Martin decided to do when they ended their marriage nine years ago.
Paltrow’s wellness website defines conscious uncoupling as “the ability to understand that every irritation and argument within a relationship is a signal to look inside ourselves and identify a negative internal object that needed healing.” So, the next time you as club chairperson are trying to figure out how to part ways with your Junior B manager, just say something like “Listen Frank, no hard feelings. It’s nothing personal, just the echo of an older emotional injury,” and that the separation, while regrettable, “will bring wholeness to the spirits of both parties who choose to recognise each other as their teacher”. Let me know how it goes.
