Fair play to Ciarán McDonald anyway.

SuperMac and mean Mayo just setting the trap for Dublin

Still showing for the ball. Still hopping it. And following the lead of the county’s other blond bombshell in making a big week for the county all about him.

This time, though, Mac has done them a great service.

Already basking in the long shadows cast by our new infatuation with Donegal and their total football makeover, Mayo were schnaking, sckulking into Croker anyway.

And then the call, as widely rumoured, went out. McDonald still had something to offer.

So out he came, as languid and graceful as ever he was on the 40, to do a few auld interviews this week, to draw the sting, just in case anyone got too interested in the current crop.

Pulling a few heartstrings with sad talk about old disappointments. Poor old fragrant, misfortunate Mayo. Would it ever come right for them? So we forget altogether the rather meaner, more business-like, slightly malodorous bunch out to do a big job Sunday.

Just the way they want it.

All of it will go for naught, of course, if they can’t achieve the only thing that counts on big days like these.

But if Mayo do secure their preferred choice of warm-up site, everything else will surely follow.
