Angry Fans

The Examiner’s football correspondent Liam Mackey likes a good argument, and he’s got strong views of his own.

Angry Fans

Today, and every Tuesday, he will be acting as referee on your opinions on the Premiership.

Let him know what you think and he’ll argue the toss with you.

We’ll be offering a free sports prize to the star contribution each week.

This week is Fergie trying to deflect criticism, and United’s shortcomings, and Berbatov and Carrick. and horses and Glazers. Avram Grant getting Portsmouth to Wembley. 'Mr Happy' and 'Mr Angry'. Did John Terry get it right. Have Benitez and Ferguson’s given up on the title. Wembley playing surface.

Letter of the week goes to Declan Doyle, Ager, formerly Wexford. Get in touch with your postal address and our magnificent prize will be winging its way to you.

SO FERGIE, it is Bayern Munich players’ fault that Rafael was sent off? What rubbish from a so-called great manager. The lad was naive but rightly booked twice. Fergie again trying to deflect criticism of his and the team’s shortcomings/ failings. The fact is that United threw away a three goal lead on the night (two goal lead aggregate) and as a result were knocked out. Not for the first time recently, the team capitulated and in the second half lacked leadership, passion, tempo, organisation and courage. The red card did affect the team but why did they stop competing/ playing like they had in the first half?

It was obvious once Munich scored before half time that the next goal was crucial. United retreated and invited Munich onto them which was a crazy tactic. Munich’s defensive frailities were obvious even in the second half on the rare occasions United attacked. Also, Rooney should have been subbed after the third goal went in. He was unfit and struggling. Is the fact he stayed on a reflection of how Fergie feels now about Berbatov, i.e. he does not have any faith in him?

As rightly highlighted by the RTE panel on the night, this United team is average at best. The financial woes of the club will in my humble opinion have a detrimental effect on the team in the near future. Giggs, Neville, Scholes (probably Ferdinand too) have run their race. Berbatov, Carrick, Anderson, Owen (maybe Nani should get another s eason?) need to be moved on.

Liverpool’s Torres stated recently that he believed the team needed 4-5 world class players. United are in a similar position and any true supporter of the club has stated this all season. Fergie’s recent signings Obertan, Diouf are never going to make it. Also, spending a reputed £12m on Chris Smalling is baffling.

Did he sign him just to keep him out of Arsenal’s clutches? I firmly believe that United have done well this season to still be competing for the Premiership when you consider the calibre of the players who departed and were not replaced.

However, it should not deflect from the manner in which we were knocked out of Europe or the lack of quality in the squad highlighted by seven league defeats and the unacceptable performances in many of those games. It’s going to be a very interesting summer at Old Trafford.

OUR SHOUT: All of which weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth just leaves me space to mention someone’s suggestion of a headline to sum up Carrick’s role in that Olic goal: ‘Carrick Unsure’. Write it down, it’s a good one.
