Angry Fans

Fuming at the referee? Out of the championship? Who’ll win the All-Irelands? It’s your shout every Tuesday.

Angry Fans

The fans are angry this week at the mindless way some Tipp ‘fans’ mucked up the minute’s silence tribute to one of their all-time greats … Limerick reminded us, yet again, how being reduced to fourteen players can inspire a team in championship hurling … The Saga of the Semple Eight still drags on, with the GAA due to announce decisions on the proposed suspensions later today. The fans are angry – understandably – at the long delay in dealing with this.

COMMENT of the Week goes to Jerry P for rightly lashing the morons who jeered and cheered during the silent tribute to Kieran Carey on Sunday in Limerick.

EMBARRASSING to say the least, the carry-on, clearly heard onT.V. during the tribute to Kieran Carey today.Yahoos bawling all over the place, others shout at them to shut up while every few seconds somebody roars, "Come on Tipp / Limerick “. Time to admit that we are unable to behave ourselves in sufficient numbers on occasions like this and call a halt before the memory of anyone else is besmirched. –– Jerry P

IT was dreadful before the Tipp v Limerick game with buckos in the crowd constantly yahooing, roaring and generally bucklepping about the place during the minute's silence. –– Hold the Line

ATTENDED the match as a neutral today. Tipperary supporters let themselves down big time during the minute’s silence. The messing started at the Tipp end and was answered by the Limerick crowd on the far terrace. Shame they couldn't have respect for their own. I wonder did it dawn on Eoin Kelly and the lads that when their day comes their support won't respect them either? –– Hit Em Hard Hard

AFR’S SHOUT - SAD behaviour. Drink involved, no doubt. Red Cards all round to these so-called ‘supporters’. None of them fit to even tie the late Kieran Carey’s boot laces. Time to copy the soccer idea of a minute’s applause instead of a minute’s silence.

ANYBODY watching the end of /‘The Sunday Game’/ there? That clown Pat Spillane looking into the wrong camera for about five minutes. Superb television though. –– Bandage

AFR’S SHOUT YEAH, I copped it alright. Maybe the Director was showing us Pat’s Patrick Pearse profile so we’d see his ‘good’ side in the shot. Something many hurling followers believe they rarely see. FOR all the abuse they get on the field, the refs’ new gear is terrible looking. What are O’Neill’s doing with these latest designs? The white ones look like a cast off of Ian Brown's ‘Stone Roses’ t-shirt circa 1989 “I Wanna be Adored" video. –– Camann

AFR’S SHOUT AH c’mon, Camann. There can't be anything worse than the Tipp goalie’s jersey. How does Brendan Cummins stick it? Yellow Card to you for blaming O’Neill’s on this. Croke Park fully involved the Refs’ Association in the design and we see the results. They should stick to their whistles and let others do the designing. Just like Ian Brown advised on his 2004 CD… ‘Keep What Ya Got’.

BENNIS was celebrating like they'd won the game at the end and it was a great performance from Limerick to come back like that. But to have that kind of headless chicken play when the match was there for the winning would drive me mad if I was a Limerick fan. –– Ungrateful Whelp

DON’T worry about Bennis's reaction. Take a look at Bab's face at the end. It was the clear realisation on his face that he's at nothing with this team. In fairness to Bennis, and you have to be from Limerick to realise this, it was a very important step after many had questioned their mental strength etc. The players didn't seem to be overly celebrating. Bennis might also be celebrating because Limerick management clearly outfoxed Tipp's in terms of the changes made. –– Miller 1910

AFR’S SHOUT ‘HEADLESS chickens’ is unfair to the Limerick team. Tick in the Book, to you Ungrateful Whelp for that! A fantastic game of hurling from both teams to which Limerick contributed more than their share. In the heat of the game mistakes can be made, the wrong option called. But, hey, that’s Munster championship hurling for ya!

I THINK Eoin Kelly probably deserved a second yellow, but did anyone else notice the way he rolled around on the floor for a minute or two while three medical staff rushed in? As soon as Reale is sent off, up he pops fit as a fiddle again and gets on with the game no bother. –– Handy Score

AFR’S SHOUT AH, no. It was a hard stroke on his right hand. I’d say it stung a lot. Still, the sight of the guy who’s just fouled you being given the line often seems to have miraculous revival powers for some players.

WHAT was everyone's opinion on the referee's display? O'Shaughnessy, on one or two occasions, got a raw deal from him, in my opinion. Lucey was harshly penalised after clearing the ball in the first half too I thought. The steps rule was also not implemented on numerous occasions. Still, I must admit I thought Barry Foley's first "point" was wide of the post. –– Dodgy Keeper

AFR’S SHOUT I DON’T agree. Faulting the ref is all too easy after a fast, closely contested game like this. Straight Red Card for taking the easy option. Maybe the glare from his new white jersey blinded him once or twice, but Diarmuid Kirwan reffed a good game and immensely helped the occasion.

WHAT does everyone think about the Tipp goal? I'm an avid Limerick supporter and reviewing the match on TV afterwards it looked to me like Carroll completely charged with the sliothar, shouldering Seamus Hickey into the face. He completely upended him. That’s not allowed. If anything, should it not have been a free out? –– Setanta’s Girlfriend

AFR’S SHOUT AH, give us a break! Carroll’s goal was a fine example of Munster hurling at its best. He shipped a lot of punishment without retaliation, burst through and cleverly flicked to the back of the net. As a member of the famed ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ back line, the late Kieran Carey would’ve understood and approved.

MAYBE the ‘Semple Eight’ will become the ‘Semple Four’? I'm not sure about all of them getting a suspension. –– An Reiteoir

I JUST wish they'd get on with it and tell us what the punishments are if any. It’s dragging out longer than the talks between the Greens and FF. I expect they are all going to get off. It is Cork that's involved after all. –– pwei

PERSONALLY as a Cork man, I hope the players serve their suspensions, coz if they don't and they go on and win Munster we'll never hear the end of how Frank got us out of jail etc. –– Pre Flop

AFR’S SHOUT IT’S amazing that the courts of the land regularly deal with drug dealers and murderers in a two-stage process while it takes *four* steps to resolve a GAA disciplinary issue. We need to scrap the present alphabet soup of initials – CCC, CHC, CAC and DRA – and replace them with a simple, two-stage process. A hearing. An appeal. End of story. We also need the civil courts to tell players to stop moaning and take their GAA medicine.

WELL,“ Angry Fans” editor-Just give me a red card now for what I think of the Munster football championship. Cork and Kerry have it SO easy. No competition in Munster certainly not Waterford, Clare, Limerick, nor Tipp. Teams in Leinster and Ulster have to prepare for REAL championship games come May. We have already had a number of draws in Ulster and Leinster this year before the Meath –Dublin game. Meanwhile, Cork and Kerry are guaranteed at least a quarter final or at worst one game against a back door team that has more chance of being stale or suffer injuries and suspensions before the quarter final. Time for an open draw or to lump Galway and Mayo et al. into Munster, and make the chase for Sam Maguire a more even competition. –– Ulster Hurler email

AFR’S SHOUT ALWAYS glad to oblige an Angry Fan, Ulster Hurler. If that’s not some class of an oxymoron? So, here’s your straight Red Card. It’s for your heretical comments and your jumbling up of geography and football. Enjoy your break!
