Ronan O’Gara: Perspective is the first casualty of crisis talk

The Azzurri may come to Dublin with their tails up, but Andy Farrell's men will be cranky.

If you’re an Irish fan, and I’m assuming you are, is it better that Gonzalo Quesada’s Italy beat Scotland last weekend? I was in Rome, Italy are improving and there’s a lot in that. They are improving in real terms, in all facets of the game, in their detail and accuracies – and their creativity.

They may come a cropper in Dublin on Saturday because Ireland should rebound strong, but don’t bank on it. After one round, it is easier to reach the conclusion that France and England are playing for the Six Nations title and that Ireland are part of the second group scrapping for third. Reaction to Paris has been predictably apocalyptic, to use my new word. I heard Ireland coach John Fogarty describe it as ‘disingenuous’ during the week and whatever of that, that’s not a word he learned in Munster when we played together. A few weeks in Donnybrook can do awful things to a man.
