The pitch looked a little more level as Paul Townend stalked his way to the parade ring for the opener on Thursday. He now looks as sore as Jack Kennedy, but in a jockey's fitness test, if you can walk, you can ride, so get on their backs and let adrenalin do the rest. Mind over matter. You don't get to the top in this sphere carrying a bag full of sick notes.

The flag dropped at 3.40pm for round one on D-day. A draw would do Jack, but leaving here Thursday evening, still five down, would make things tight for Paul. Neither got involved in the first, with both electing to take their time and Nico De Bonville doing the opposite on the winner Pigeon House.
