Angry holidaymakers were left without luggage when they touched down at their destination over the weekend due to technical issues with Shannon airport's baggage carousel.

A spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group confirmed the issue, which impacted a number of passengers.

In a statement sent to the Irish Examiner they said: "On Saturday morning, we experienced a technical issue affecting our airport baggage handling system, which was resolved in a matter of hours.

"While airport operations continued throughout the period, some checked baggage was unable to travel on the same flight as passengers.

"In line with standard procedures, we are working with our airline partners to minimise any further inconvenience to passengers by ensuring affected baggage is delivered to its destination as quickly as possible. We apologise to any passengers who were affected by this issue and thank them for their patience and understanding."

A number of holidaymakers took to social media in recent days amid a frustrating wait for their baggage. Among them was social media influencer Aoibheann Fitz, who shared her personal experience with her 19,000 followers on Instagram.

"We arrived in Tenerife Airport to be told that 12 bags out of the full Ryanair flight made it on to the flight. We have no bags, no make-up, not a thing. We are really running out of patience and clothes that will fit me where we are. Hopefully, the suitcases will arrive tomorrow. This is what we're living with.”

She wasn’t the only disgruntled customer to vent their feelings online. Another woman described her frustration at being without her belongings while on holiday.

“Landed in Tenerife yesterday from Shannon," she said. "So far have only received one email from Tenerife airport telling us they don’t know when we will get our bags. The least we expect is that we are kept informed. Still don’t know if our bags have left Shannon yet.”
