HOME hunters who come to Ard Alainn, a 1970s bungalow east of Cork city at The Highlands, Glounthaune, will do both of two things: they’ll look out at the long harbour views from this long-time family home and grounds, and, they’ll also look up into the attic roof to see “can we go up?”

The four-bed/one en suite
50-plus year old home has been decades in the one family’s hands, says agent Paul Fenton of Sherry FitzGerald, who guides at €595,000, and has c 1,560 sq ft inside on the ground floor alone, with a long, open attic area, part floored, ideal for storage.

But, oh what potential to go up a level and get a big dormer or apex window for those views, Mr Fenton agrees.

Homes to one side are already two-storey and were built larger day one, with The Highlands overall taking off in the 1970s as start-up companies flocked to Little Island (Dublin families relocating to Cork seemed to favour it too.)

Several ‘aspirational’ homes delivered here at the time had outdoor swimming pools, including one, San Antonio which went to the early summer market with a €675k AMV and which sold in jig-time.

Prices range hugely at The Highlands, according to the Price Register which lists 15-20 sales, typically in the €350-550k range, with two making well over €800,000.

Brick faced in front on approch, Ard Alainn has two reception rooms, one with double door access to a south facing patio, the other has sliding doors, and internal sliding doors to a dated kitchen.

There are four bedrooms (one en suite) and main bathroom, with a WC in the attached east gable end garage.

VERDICT: Sort of a blank canvas, but cleanly presented, on a 0.45 acre sloping site, ready for a green finger challenge: an ideal elevated hillside trader up for families in the greater Glanmire/Glounthaune/Carrigtwohill hinterland.
