Craft time

LIFTING our heads above the drizzle and grey clouds becomes more challenging as our so-called summer progresses towards darker evenings, leaving us with the feeling summer has by-passed us altogether.

As an antidote, get out and about and indulge in some cultural activity when the third annual Cork Craft Month comes to town. From Friday, Aug 10 to Sunday, Sept 9 events around the city and county will keep you busy and stimulated, with opportunities for buying and even getting active in craft-making.

At its hub is a craft village centred around the Cornmarket Street area of Cork City where the Locus exhibition will take place from Aug 10-23. Showing a mix of traditional and contemporary furniture by Cork-based designer/makers, it is also a selling exhibition so if you have a hankering to commission a piece of furniture or buy something on show that may be part of a limited edition collection, this is an opportunity to meet and chat to a variety of established and up-and-coming designers. Over 25 other events will be spread across the city and county. Kinsale, with its established arts and cultural milieu, will host an exhibition entitled Who Made This? Cork Creates will also take place at the Old Mill, Kinsale from Aug 10-26. Rather interestingly, it takes the focus off the crafted product and onto the crafts person to inform the public of the story — concept and development — behind the work.
