Borris Station Master’s House right on track for new owners
THE trains don’t run through Borris village in Carlow any more but the old Station Master’s House is looking better than ever.
Built in 1856 the old cut stone building has been thoroughly refurbished and extended and is now a very attractive home with a third of an acre of gardens.
Owned by a photographer and an architect who are planning to emigrate, the property has kept its original façade and tall chimneys but now has a few creature comforts that the old stationmaster couldn’t even have imagined, including a modern kitchen and two en suite bedrooms.
In the original part of the house, which now has double glazed sash windows, the owners have put in a new kitchen with cream-coloured units, a semi-circular counter and integrated appliances.
Built on to one of the stone walls at the rear is a new tiled dining room, and in the new extension the owners have put on a large modern lounge which has high ceilings with Velux windows and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a solid fuel stove.
The property also has a utility room and three bedrooms, including two with en suites and one of which also has a walk-in wardrobe. At both sides of the house there are lawned gardens with shrubs and at the rear there’s a courtyard with some old stone sheds.
The Station Master’s House is part of a cluster of properties which were originally built by the Great Southern and Western Railway.
The last train left Borris in the 1960s and since then the properties in the old station yard have been adapted for residential use.
Located within a few minutes walk from the village centre, they have a communal garden area.
Sherry FitzGerald McDermott say Station Masters House is now a very attractive home which combines old world character with modern comfort.
