Letter to the Editor: Do small things with great kindness
I had the good fortune as a Kerry man to be in attendance in Killarney on Sunday last for the Mayo game. It is not that display but my subsequent journey to Waterford that prompts this letter.
I had bought my online ticket for the last connecting bus to Waterford (6.30pm from Killarney) online. Due to traffic, the bus was late from Tralee and due to numbers at the queue, I was not among the fortunate to get on the bus initially.
The driver kindly allowed me to make a plea to the patrons in the hope one would give up a seat which fortunately one did without hesitation, with only a quick thank you and a shake of the hand from yours truly.
Even at that as we were 50 minutes late starting out and in danger of missing the connecting bus from Cork. My second piece of good fortune was to be seated beside a man who not only proved to be an engaging co-passenger but a kind soul.
He assured me that should I miss my connection, we would get a later bus to Midleton where he lives and he’d drive me to Youghal which would have brought me within 10 miles of home.
To that end, his kindness was not needed as our bus driver had rung ahead to Cork bus station to request that the connecting bus delay its departure.
Again as I subsequently learned, we had another obliging driver who waited for our arrival in Cork and carried us on our way.
To end, two kind-hearted fellow passengers and two obliging employees of Bus Éireann meant that the highlight of the day was not on the hallowed turf of Fitzgerald Stadium but on the journey from it.
As no names or numbers were ever exchanged I can but express my thanks through your paper in the hope that one or all will read it.
